Edward Sturm

Stage Director | Theatre Artist

Hello!

I’m Edward. Raised in Wichita, KS, and currently based in Boston, MA, I am a multi-hyphenate theatre artist compelled to render the past present on stage. In my work, I bring together academic disciplines, big questions, small kindnesses, ways of moving, geographies, histories, and ecosystems.

I am a director, dramaturg, writer, actor, and theatre & opera administrator.

Artistic Philosophy

I believe that live performance draws from humanity’s most essential wellspring; I believe that theatre, like the surface of water, is not only reflective, but has beneath it a world unto itself; I believe that diving into this artform, we can move with new freedoms and limitations, we can find sunken histories and forgotten stories, and that we might emerge fundamentally changed.

STREET SCENE

Central City Opera, July 13–Aug. 3

Assistant Stage Director

Director: Daniel Pelzig

Taking place over two hot summer days in New York City, Kurt Weill’s two-act American opera Street Scene delves into the lives of the multi-ethnic residents of a tenement building, showcasing their hopes, dreams, and struggles. Throughout the story, musical numbers range from operatic arias to jazz and blues, reflecting the mix of cultures and emotions present in the tenement setting. Street Scene offers a commentary on the challenges faced by immigrants, the impact of poverty, and the complexities of love and relationships in a densely populated urban environment.
